Just Completed, O4A was awarded the commission for the Winskill Park Fieldhouse in September 2019. Work began shortly after that. The O4A team met with Delta City officials and user groups to begin to develop programmatic options for consideration. Three comprehensive site location and orientation options were presented.
The team settled on a simple form that reflects and adapts Delta’s agricultural building typology and the open-field park setting that make up its context. The project program area was divided into two buildings: one with a multi-purpose space to serve as headquarters for local clubs and for general use, and an adjacent building for park user washrooms, change rooms and storage area.
The planning accounted for an open and reflective space in front that also supports outdoor activities. The adjacent hospice, seniors’ residence and lawn bowling facilities are complimented by the active fields to the east and community centre / aquatic centre to the south. This programmatic makeup suggests a broad demographic of potential users of the facility.
The Winskill Fieldhouse is the newest addition to Winskill Park in downtown Tsawwassen, BC. The facility and new lawn bowling green anchor the park’s north end. The simple and sophisticated facility speaks to a community that is simultaneously growing and staying true to its roots. The design includes a simple but expressive elevation that is light and open, strategically uses wood in its simplest form and gesturally connects to other areas of the park and its natural setting.
